Egg Charge Garden Adventure Connects Students With Solar Power

On Thursday, April 17, we teamed up with Fort Smith’s Howard Elementary School for a fun-filled event: the Egg Charge and Garden Adventure. This exciting day was made possible through the participation of several amazing groups: Antioch for Youth & Family, Fort Smith Police Department, Fort Smith Round Table, Fort Smith Alumnae-Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc , Future School of Fort Smith, the Fort Smith Lincoln Alumni, Elizabeth McGill Drop-In Center, Solar Under the Sun, CCL Fort Smith Chapter, @Sebastian County Conservation District, Arkansas Resource Conservation and Development Council, Inc., and members from Central Presbyterian Church, Fort Smith, AR.
Nearly five hundred students walked to the neighborhood community garden and enjoyed hands-on lessons about solar energy—learning how it powers everything from our homes to our movements! Thanks to our good friends Ruthie and Chris McRae of Solar Under the Sun for leading this interactive session. Students also explored what’s “growin’ on” in the garden and wrapped it all up with the Egg Charge. We called it a “charge” because we talked about how electrons get energized by the sun—and just like that, the students charged after the eggs. Even better? These engaging lessons were designed to align with current Arkansas curriculum standards, giving students a meaningful (and fun!) learning experience.
